Tanja
Bolenz is a lettercutter, calligrapher and bookbinder
who lives in the Dovey valley, near Machynlleth, Wales, UK.
Her work includes lettering, drawn and cut by hand into stone,
written with a broad-edged nib on paper,
or painted with a brush on a variety of surfaces,
including paper, wood and cloth. Some of her hand-bound
books also contain lettering.
Each piece of work, whether written, painted or
carved,
requires its own unique design. The chosen text
strongly influences the design of the lettering.
The variety of tools employed plays an important part in the
design process, as each tool presents different
challenges when applied to different media.
Tanja’s aim is to go on exploring letter
design, texture and the meaning of text in stone,
on paper, and in book form.
Tanja has taken part in numerous exhibitions
in Canada, the US, Britain and Belgium. Her work
is in private collections in Canada, the USA, Britain, Germany,
Italy and France.
